Fabrics

Choosing the right fabric for curtains does not have to involve difficulty. There are many reasons to use curtains. Some of them are to protect your privacy, add decorative accents to homes, keep the sun and heat from entering the house.  Many people use curtains to cover blinds as well as keep the room shaded when the blinds are open.

With so many decisions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed,  so one of the first questions I ask my clients is how they want their choice of window dressings to perform, are they needed for light and heat control, privacy or are they purely Aesthetic , this is something you need to know prior to selecting your fabric.

Curtains make a room—but only when chosen correctly.  You’ll need to decide if you want the curtains to blend with the decor or to pop. For blending, pick curtains that are the same tone as the wall but a few shades darker, or choose a non-dominant subtle color in the room, consider the mood of the room and what texture you would need to set.

Printed fabrics are available in many designs and colour ways, from the simple but sophisticated stripes in varying widths, floral, Geometric, script, animal prints and more. You tend to have a lot more flexibility with colour when you select a pattern as you have multiple colour’s to work with. This means that you can select one of the colours to draw on when choosing other decor.

A rule of thumb: If you have patterned furniture or bedding (or a very elaborate rug), stick with solid curtains. If you have solid-color furniture or bedding, consider patterned curtains.

With the extreme UV rating which we experience in Australia, it is recommended that extra precautions are taken when selecting fabrics. A superior quality lining is always recommended. Depending on the situation, there are many different linings available to protect the fabric e.g. thermal linings for added insulation and blockout linings for light control.

Not only do block out lined drapes offer great privacy but they also keep out the heat and the cold saving you on ever increasing power costs. Block out means the fabric will not let the light in, this is only possible with the full 3 pass coating, other Room Darkening fabrics could allow the light to filter through. You should make yourself aware of the difference between a block out (3 pass) and anything less as the backings look similar to the untrained eye but can be coated in different grades. The quickest way to check is to hold the fabric across your eyes and face towards the light, pass your hand in front and if you see shadow it is not a block out.
